Recent photos

Our youngest daughter is away at camp along with her digital camera. Since I have yet to get a digital camera of my own, I've been stuck with using my phone, which I find to be rather unsatisfactory. Oh, well. Here are a few scenes from the last few days.

I already posted pictures of a turtle laying eggs, but I came across another one.

Another view. There's good eating on one of those...

Juvenile Canada geese wading in water that ought not to be there, overflowing the banks of Lake Monona. (Madison's river and lakes have been spilling over their banks since the beginning of June. You may have read about some of the flooding that has occurred. Of course, if you live around here, you've experienced it.) Those geese may still be cute, but before long they'll be delinquent thugs - swearing, smoking cigarettes and excreting everywhere. There's good eating on one of those...

More water that ought not to be there. This time the Yahara River.

The Yahara River bike path under East Washington Avenue is now passable, but damp. For a few weeks it was under water.

I saw this turkey moseying through the UW Arboretum yesterday. There's good eating on one of those...

Gah! It's looking at me!
You guessed it! There's good eating on one of those...

Ack! What is it?

Welcome, Dr. Zaius,

If you mean that last picture, that's dinner. Trout. We get it from a local farmers' market and they don't have the decency to cut the heads off before they sell them.

Decency, my arse! That's the way fish is supposed to be sold! When I visit my family in Portugal, one of my favorite places to go is the farmers market. There is always fresh fish, just arrived from the fishing boats early that morning, from only a few miles away. I love it.

Regarding the wildlife photos - those are pretty darned good for having been captured with a phone. I'm awaiting my new camera anxiously myself - I've been without for a month or more now and I can't wait to start taking photos again.

As for the water. Yikes. We sometimes experience flooding but not to that extent.

Hi, Pagan,

I was really just kidding about selling the fish with their heads cut off. When I was a kid I lived in Connecticut, pretty close to the ocean, and my mother used to bring home fresh fish from a market similar to what you describe. There's nothing quite like eating seafood the same day it's caught.

Thanks for the kind words about the photos. I should be happy that I can take them at all, but the phone's photos are so grainy. Someday I'll spring for a camera of my own so I'm not continually borrowing one from my kids.

The flooding has been pretty bad. A few weeks ago there were people kayaking in a major street three blocks from our house. The water is subsiding, but slowly. There are still farms in the region that are under water.

And yum, was that trout good! Not at all fishy. The turtle eggs? Not so much ...

Gees, I come over here from Matty Boy's place; I see some cute turtle pics (okay--weirded out about the eating, but okay); then all of a sudden a fish is staring at me! I'm a vegetarian; there's only so much my little tofu-heart can take!

Welcome, Dguzman!

Sorry if I grossed you out. Just so you know, all the "There's good eating on one of those" bits were a literary reference from Terry Pratchett's Small Gods (great book!) The trout with the eyeballs actually was dinner a couple of nights ago. I kept opening the refrigerator to find those little fishies staring at me and just had to take a picture. I guess I have a somewhat dark sense of humor, but not all my posts are about eating cute little animals. My apologies. I hope you'll come back.
